Third International Workshop on
Novel Index Surfaces
Growth, characterization and exploitation of epitaxial compound semiconductors on novel index surfaces
October 6 - 9, 1998
La Casona (San Rafael)
Segovia

The Third International Workshop on Growth, Characterization and Exploitation of Epitaxial Compound Semiconductors on Novel Index Surfaces (NIS-98) will be held from October 6th to October 9th, 1998. NIS-98 will bring together world experts and students working on novel index planes in order to exchange information on the latest progress in this field. The scientific program will consist of invited and contributed presentations. The official language is English.
The growth on high index planes is of great interest for the research related to the epitaxial growth and regrowth on patterned substrates, which is receiving much attention for its importance in the formation of advanced quantum structures such as quantum wires and quantum boxes. The spontaneous formation of three dimensional (3D) coherent islands on crystal surfaces brings a new challenge in the physics and technology of semiconductor heterostructures. In the recent years improved laser devices, optical modulators and switches, frequency doublers, lateral tunneling transistors, quantum dot lasers, etc., have been reported using the benefits of novel index surfaces.
The aim of this workshop is to discuss all these frontier aspects and to systematically emphasize new directions and prospects in this rapidly growing field. The workshop will provide a context of interdisciplinary discussion about material, technical, device and theoretical aspects between delegates from academia and industry.
All communications in close relation with the topics of the workshop are welcome:
"Super-flat (411)A interfaces and uniformly corrugated (775)B interfaces in GaAs/AlGaAs and InGaAs/InAlAs heterosturctures grown by MBE"
"Prospects for extended long wavelength operation of InGaAs/GaAs lasers grown by MBE on (111)B substrates"
"Quantum nanostructures grown on nonplanar substrates: Self ordering mechanisms, electronic properties, and device applications"
"MOVPE growth and properties of GaAs/AlGaAs and InGaAs/GaAs QW’s on (111)A substrates"
"Formation of II-VI nanostructures on vicinal surfaces"
"Optical and morphological properties of InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots grown on novel index surfaces"
"The effects of crystallographic orientation on the nonlinear optical properties of quantum wells"
"A perspective on novel III-V optoelectronic devices fabricated on crystalline surfaces other than the conventional (001)"
"InAs self-organized quantum dots on GaAs and InP substrates: growth, characterization, lasers"
"Lateral junction devices grown by MBE on GaAs(n11)A patterned substrates"
Refereed papers will be published as proceedings by Elsevier. Authors of accepted papers will be asked to submit their manuscript at the Workshop.
Open discussions will be encouraged, and a poster session is envisaged if the number of accepted papers advises to do it.
Registration and a Wine Reception Party will take place in the evening of October 6th.
Sessions will start on October 7th, and the workshop will close after lunch on October 9th.
An interesting package, as described in the Registration Form, is offered. Financial support for young investigators is being sought from various institutions. A partial refund of the registration fees for some young participants may be produced. Interested students should accompany their registration fees transfer with a letter to the chairman endorsed by his/her PhD Thesis adviser.
La Casona is a vacation resort located in San Rafael, a village at 60 Km from Madrid and at 33 Km from Segovia. San Rafael is well communicated with Madrid by frequent trains and buses, and it is surrounded by mountain pine forests. There will be transfers from San Rafael railway station to La Casona.
The atmosphere at La Casona is rustic and relaxing. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to taste regional Castillian dishes and Spanish wines.
Stays at La Casona after the Workshop may not be possible. For those wishing to stay in Madrid to explore its art museums and surrounding places (Toledo, Avila, Aranjuez, etc.), see the Venue to La Casona or in the Information and Tourism Links.
A visit to the old city of Segovia, followed by the Workshop Banquet, is planned for October 8th.
